Man United manager Erik ten Hag in training

The Debate: Who will start our Premier League opener?

Friday 04 August 2023 13:20

Manchester United's pre-season preparations for 2023/24 are almost over and the countdown to the return of competitive football is well and truly on.

The Reds have a double header of warm-up matches over consecutive days this weekend.

Saturday will see French top-flight side RC Lens visit Old Trafford for our only home friendly of the summer. Discounted tickets for the 12:45 BST kick-off are still available here.

Then on Sunday, La Liga outfit Athletic Club provide the opposition for the Reds at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with kick-off at 16:00 BST.

Both games will be shown live on MUTV, ManUtd.com and the United App.

During the two matches, we may see some clues as to Erik ten Hag’s plans for the new season, particularly with the first competitive clash of the new campaign in mind.

United will be one of the last two teams to take to the Premier League stage in its opening round of fixtures, when we host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Theatre of Dreams on Monday 14 August (kick-off 20:00 BST).

Among other topics, The Debate panel predicted who might make the starting XI against Wolves, based on the current squad, and the main areas of disagreement were at right-back, in midfield alongside Casemiro and the players who will start in the front four.

This is what the panellists thought. Who do you agree with?

Liam Bradford: “I think it will be Aaron Wan-Bissaka [at right-back], I think [Mason] Mount will start alongside Casemiro. I think [Christian] Eriksen [is] massively helpful in terms of unpicking difficult opposition but I'm not sure he will start that game. Then the front four will be [Marcus] Rashford, Bruno [Fernandes], Antony and then it will be either be a false nine or if Manchester United dip into the transfer market, it could be a potential striker if they decide to buy one.”

David May: “I’ll go with [Diogo] Dalot [at] right-back. Mason Mount will start, I think all the new signings [will start]. If we do get a new centre-forward in, I’m sure he will start. [Jadon] Sancho played a false-nine throughout pre-season but I don’t really think that’s his position. I think United do need an out-and-out centre forward and I do think the speculation will come to fruition and he will start.”

The Debate: How do you rate our transfers?

THE DEBATE | Let's analyse our transfers so far, Onana's confidence, this weekend’s games and the XI v Wolves...

Ian Irving: “As it is with the squad now, I think [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes definitely start. The front three [will] probably be Antony, [Jadon] Sancho and [Marcus] Rashford as it is now. If anyone else comes in, obviously that could change.”

Chris Casper: “You’ve got to understand that we’re playing Wolves as well, so you look at their transfers and who they have brought in as well. They’ve lost some good players. I think to really put a marker down in the season, let's go with a really attacking team. I think that’s really important, put a really good score on the board, a really good result. I can’t argue with the things that have been said but would [Alejandro] Garnacho get involved as well at some stage? He looks like he’s had a decent pre-season. I’m always interested by the centre-halves, so who’s going to go in there with [Raphael] Varane, [Lisandro] Martinez and [Victor] Lindelof. Who will be the two out of the three that start? I genuinely don’t know who he would normally go with.”
