100 up for Harry: Crunching the numbers

Tuesday 06 April 2021 11:47

Harry Maguire made his 100th appearance for Manchester United, during Sunday's 2-1 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The England international defender has reached the landmark in rapid fashion - there were just 602 days between his debut in August 2019 and the clash with the Seagulls, and that number would have been much reduced had football not been suspended during the first COVID-19 lockdown.

We've crunched the numbers behind Harry's century milestone, to give a greater insight into his career at United so far...

The vast majority of Maguire’s games for the Reds (68) have come in the Premier League. In fact, the skipper has yet to miss a single minute of top-flight action since joining from Leicester in August 2019 - a feat only Southampton's James Ward-Prowse can match when it comes to outfielders. Harry has also played 17 times for United in Europe, split between the Europa League (12) and Champions League (five), while the remainder of his appearances have arrived in the Emirates FA Cup (nine) and Carabao Cup (six).

WHICH GAMES HAS HE MISSED?

Astonishingly, United have lined up without Harry in just 10 of the 109 first-team fixtures played since his transfer and, in one of those – January’s FA Cup win over Watford – he came on as a half-time substitute for the injured Eric Bailly. Maguire missed half-a-dozen games in his debut campaign, including home-and-away games with Astana and a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg with Manchester City, but he’s sat out just three games this season – Brighton away in the Carabao Cup in September, the trip to Paris the following month, and February’s second leg with Real Sociedad. That’s remarkable consistency!

FAMILIAR FACES

Despite being forced to sit out that Manchester derby, City are Maguire’s joint-most common opponents in red. Ole’s side have gone up against Pep Guardiola’s men six times with the England international at the heart of defence, the same amount as Chelsea – against whom Harry netted his first Premier League goal for United. Impressively, of those dozen games against the Blues from Manchester and London, we’ve won seven, drawn three and lost just two.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (85), Marcus Rashford (84) and Mason Greenwood (83) are the players Maguire has lined up with most regularly, with Victor Lindelof (74) by far his most frequent defensive partner. Harry has shared a pitch with 37 different Reds.

GOALS

Harry has scored five times for United – the same amount of goals he managed in two seasons at the King Power Stadium. It took until January 2020 for him to net his first strike for the club, and what a goal it was in the 6-0 thrashing of Tranmere. Then there was that header at Chelsea, before an extra-time winner at Norwich in last season’s FA Cup quarter-final. This season, Maguire equalised with headers at Newcastle and against former club Sheffield United, although the latter game would ultimately end in defeat.

CLEAN SHEETS

Forty-three of Maguire’s United appearances have resulted in a clean sheet, split between the Premier League (25), Europa League (eight), FA Cup (five), Carabao Cup (four) and Champions League (one).
