Why Fred missed the Leeds game

Wednesday 12 July 2023 15:26

Fred is sitting out Manchester United's opening pre-season game, against Leeds United in Oslo.

The Brazil international was part of the squad that travelled to the Norwegian capital for the friendly, which is being shown live on MUTV.

However, he is not due to participate in the match, which will see Erik ten Hag spread out the minutes for the party and ease new signing Mason Mount into the fray.

Fred's omission is purely a precaution and because he is managing his workload, after returning for training at Carrington last week.

It means he misses out on lining up alongside Mount in midfield, but there is a chance for youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Hannibal to impress in the engine room, against the Championship side.

Fred started the Emirates FA Cup final against Manchester City, in our final fixture of 2022/23, and he will, no doubt, be keen to be involved again soon as we build up to next term.

The Reds are in Scotland next week for another friendly, against French side Lyon.

The match is being held at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, and takes place on Wednesday at 14:00 BST.
