Champions League: What is the state of play in Group A?

Thursday 26 October 2023 09:00

Manchester United kickstarted our UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday, with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Copenhagen.

Harry Maguire headed home the only goal, but that wasn't the only major incident as Andre Onana saved a penalty with the last touch of the game to secure the points.

It marked our first win of the 2023/24 campaign, following defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the opening pair of fixtures.

With each team now having played each other, let's take a look at the Group A state of play...

Onana: We have to continue like this

 Article

Andre Onana believes the manner of Tuesday’s win over FC Copenhagen can give United confidence.

German giants Bayern currently sit top with a perfect record, picking up three wins from three, including that breathless 4-3 success over the Reds back in September.

They followed that up with a narrow 2-1 victory against Copenhagen, before dispatching Galatasaray 3-1 in Istanbul in Tuesday's earlier kick-off.

The Turkish side missed the chance to overtake Thomas Tuchel's side but still sit in second on four points.
Their only victory came against the Reds, defeating us at home in the wake of a 2-2 draw to Copenhagen in Turkey.

Our victory on Tuesday saw us move up the table, getting our first points on the board and we are now third - a point behind Galatasaray.

Copenhagen are fourth with the sole point, meaning that, while Bayern are in charge at the top, it is still all to play for with key fixtures on the horizon.
