What's on at United this week?

Monday 18 November 2019 10:18

It will be all systems go for Manchester United this week when the final international break of 2019 draws to a close.

The four teams we cover in club media are in action, culminating with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team making the short trip to Bramall Lane to take on high-flying Sheffield United on Sunday.

Here’s what else is on the horizon at United in this seven-day period...

MONDAY

As is usual for a Monday evening when there is no Under-23s game, we’ll be broadcasting Kicking Off on MUTV and the Official App. Tune in from 18:30 GMT as the hosts Sam Homewood and Wes Brown chat to United fans via video call on a range of different Reds-related topics. We’ll also be celebrating Peter Schmeichel’s birthday. The Great Dane, who made 398 appearances during his eight years at Old Trafford, turns 56.

Happy birthday, Peter!

TUESDAY

The latest episode of the UTD Podcast is released on Tuesday, and this time we’re focusing on one of the hosts, former United defender David May. Before it goes live, we’ll be providing a teaser to whet your appetite, so be sure to look out for that.

Tuesday also marks 28 years since we won the European Super Cup for the first and, so far, only time. After Steve Bruce's early penalty was saved by Zvonko Milojevic, Brian McClair struck midway through the second half to defeat European champions Red Star Belgrade 1-0 at Old Trafford, in a game which took place over one leg, instead of the customary two, due to political unrest in Yugoslavia.

WEDNESDAY

With the international break at an end, the players will be returning to Manchester from their respective countries. Attention will then start to turn towards domestic action, with Sheffield United next up for the Reds in the Premier League.

THURSDAY

Manchester United Women’s Continental League Cup campaign continues as we host Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village, in a match which gets under way at 19:30 GMT. We reached the semi-final of this competition last season, and, with wins over Manchester City and Everton already secured, three more points against the Foxes could guarantee progress to the next round, if City fail to defeat the Toffees in the other Group C game.

United Women were winners last time out in the Continental Cup, at Everton on 3 November.

FRIDAY

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will address the media at the Aon Training Complex ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Sheffield United. You can watch it on MUTV or in the Official App, where there will also be live text updates.

Later on, our Under-23s will stride out on to the Old Trafford turf for the second time this season after a 2-2 draw there against leaders West Ham in August. Neil Wood's side, who are currently second in the Premier League 2 Division 2 table with eight wins, one draw and only one defeat so far, entertain Sunderland in a game that will be shown live on MUTV, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

It’s also a very happy birthday to Chris Smalling, who turns 30 on Friday. The centre-back, who is currently on a season-long loan at Roma, has claimed five major trophies during his nine seasons at Old Trafford, including the 2011 and 2013 Premier League titles and the 2017 Europa League.

Angel Gomes was on the scoresheet the last time the Under-23s played at Old Trafford.

SATURDAY

As the first team conclude preparations prior to the resumption of the Premier League campaign, Neil Ryan’s Under-18s take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the Under-18 Premier League Cup at Aon Training Complex. The Seagulls lead Group F with six points from two games, while United drew our opener, against Leicester City. The game will be broadcast live on MUTV, from 11:00 GMT.

SUNDAY

The Reds travel to South Yorkshire to face Sheffield United in the Premier League in a match which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports (kick-off 16:30 GMT). Chris Wilder’s side, who are riding high in the table after securing promotion from the Championship last season, are unbeaten in their last five top-flight games and will pose a tough test in what is our first trip to Bramall Lane since November 2006.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Casey Stoney’s United Women are in action again, with Brighton making the trip up to Leigh Sports Village in the WSL (kick-off 12:00 GMT). The teams met in the Women's FA Cup back in February, with two Lauren James goals giving the Reds an impressive win.
