Things we noticed in United's win over Everton

Friday 06 January 2023 23:38

Manchester United’s hard-fought 3-1 victory over Everton was an end-to-end contest, but the Reds ultimately picked up a fifth win in a row since the restart after the World Cup.

Anthony's early strike, Marcus Rashford's penalty and a Conor Coady own goal were enough to outweigh the Everton defender's first-half equaliser.

Rashford has now scored in five consecutive games, the first time the forward has achieved this in his United career. But the form of our no.10 is just one of the talking points arising from a dramatic Emirates FA Cup tie as you can read below...

PROPER CUP ATMOSPHERE

With the Toffees filling up the majority of the East Stand, directly opposite to the Stretford End, the atmosphere inside the Theatre of Dreams was electric. The home crowd chanted the name of the United great we signed from Everton, record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, as well as breaking out the classic songs. The away fans were vociferous before the game as well, but after the early goal from Antony, their noise levels lowered until Conor Coady's equaliser brought them to life again.

ANTONY OPENS ANOTHER ACCOUNT

After a bright start to life in a red shirt with his debut goal against Arsenal, Antony’s attacking form seemed to drop off for a while. But tonight, directly in front of the away supporters, the Brazilian wing wizard showed exactly why Ten Hag brought him over from Ajax. Showing great awareness to latch onto the end of Marcus Rashford’s pass, United’s no.21 made the finish past Jordan Pickford look easy. Antony has now netted in his maiden appearances in two different competitions - the Premier League and FA Cup - and is now the second Brazilian to score for us in the latter after Fabio grabbed a goal in our 2-0 home win over Arsenal in March 2011. The samba sensation is also now the proud owner of the fastest goal under Ten Hag’s tenure, with his strike after just four minutes coming comfortably earlier than Christian Eriksen’s effort at Fulham that clocked in at 14 minutes.

FAST STARTS IN BOTH HALVES

United began the second half on fire, in a similar fashion to the first. After a delay caused by the injury to Alex Iwobi, the Reds compounded the misery of Everton, who looked dejected by the loss of their in-form midfielder. Rashford’s run into the area was unchallenged and Coady, the man who scored in front of the Stretford End in the first half for the Toffees, scored an own goal to give the Reds the lead once again. This time it had taken just seven minutes from the restart.

STREAK ENDS FOR OLD FRIENDS

After 10 games of playing together for the Reds, Raphael Varane and Casemiro finally saw an opposing player score against us. The former Real Madrid duo have formed a strong partnership since being reunited in Manchester, with the French centre-back and the Brazilian midfielder helping to keep nine clean sheets in their previous nine appearances in tandem across all competitions.

RAMPANT RASHFORD

Just another day at the office these days for Marcus Rashford. Before scoring his fifth goal in five matches to continue his incredible form, he assisted Antony's opener and caused the ball to ricochet off Conor Coady. The England international did not stop running throughout the tie, causing problems for Seamus Coleman down the left-hand side before switching into the striker role when Anthony Martial made way for Alejandro Garnacho. Rashford looked unstoppable, and with the way things are going for United’s top scorer, who knows how many goals he could end up with this season.

TEN HAG'S CHANGING OF THE GUARD

With the Reds' lead looking vulnerable in the dying moments of the match, Ten Hag made a change to his formation to see out the game. Bringing on Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Fred, the United boss switched to a 5-3-2 formation, forming a defensive wall which Everton could not penetrate and enabling Rashford and Garnacho to break with their pace and keep the ball inside the opposition territory.
