What’s happening this week at United?

Monday 04 July 2022 10:00

The first full week of July 2022 is set to be a busy one at Manchester United with things to look forward to from across the globe.

Erik ten Hag’s Reds will step up pre-season preparations and fly out to Thailand for the start of Tour 2022.

At Old Trafford, UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 will kick off in front of nearly 75,000 fans, in the first of several fixtures that could have United Women involvement in the coming weeks.

There’s all this and more to come, so here’s a handy day-by-day breakdown of everything to look out for…
MONDAY

Week two of our 2022/23 preparations kicks into gear with Ten Hag’s squad set to continue pre-season training at Carrington. Although the exact date is still to be confirmed, it is expected that several senior Reds who are still enjoying their summer breaks - due to their international commitments earlier this month – will return this week after an initial round of medical tests, as is normal protocol. On Monday evening, be sure to keep an eye out for the latest UTD Podcast, with this week’s guest Henrik Larsson, and a new episode of our weekly ‘The Debate’ show.

TUESDAY

The countdown to the start of Tour 2022 will continue and we will bring you further coverage from the training ground as the players continue to put in the work, exactly a week before our first pre-season match against Liverpool, in Bangkok.

Later on, be sure to check out ManUtd.com and the United App, as we have delved into the archive to rerelease another episode of the golden ‘Rio’s Video Diary’ series, which was shot by our legendary former defender Ferdinand across previous pre-season tours. This one is the second part from our tour 10 years ago, prior to our 2012/13 Premier League-winning campaign.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday marks the opening day of this summer’s highly anticipated UEFA Women’s European Championship in England. The tournament, originally scheduled to be held in 2021, was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the wait will finally be over come 20:00 BST when England take on Austria in front of a sell-out crowd at Old Trafford. As well as being held in M16, United’s Mary Earps, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone could all be involved for the home side.

THURSDAY

Our players’ participation could continue on Thursday too, also in Group A, as Vilde Boe Risa and Maria Thorisdottir, of Norway, begin their campaign with a fixture against Northern Ireland (20:00 BST). By then, it will also be less than 24 hours until our men’s squad depart for Thailand, and we’ll also be wishing happy birthday to both United Women's defender Millie Turner and former Reds winger Mickey Thomas.

FRIDAY

Tour 2022 officially gets under way on Friday as the players and staff set off for Asia from Manchester Airport, four days before our first match against Liverpool in Bangkok. Be sure to keep tabs on ManUtd.com and the United App throughout the day for all of your exclusive access to the departure.

There could be further United Euros involvement too in the evening as Ona Batlle’s Spain take on Finland in Group B at Stadium MK (17:00 BST).

SATURDAY

The first 24 hours of the weekend will be our first full day in Thailand as the countdown continues to our first outing of pre-season. The wait for on-field action will be over for Jackie Groenen, however, as she and the Netherlands begin their defence of the Women’s Euros against Sweden in Sheffield.

There are also several birthdays for us to celebrate: that of United Women midfielder Lucy Staniforth, plus former Reds Ashley Young and the Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio.

SUNDAY

We will continue to bring you exclusive content from Tour 2022 and the squad’s pre-season preparations in Thailand, just two days before our opening match of the trip against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. A reminder that you can watch that game, and our five other matches this summer, live on MUTV.
