Three home wins over Premier League newcomers

Thursday 09 November 2023 18:00

Luton Town will become Manchester United’s 50th different Premier League opponents when they visit Old Trafford for the first time in 32 years on Saturday (kick-off 15:00 GMT).

We last welcomed the Hatters to M16 in the final season of the old Division One in September 1991, when Paul Ince, Steve Bruce, Brian McClair and Mark Hughes all scored in a resounding 5-0 win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Luton are back in the top flight for the first time since then and are beginning to find their feet this term, with only a last-gasp equaliser denying them a famous win over Liverpool last time out.

However, when it comes to United’s encounters with newly promoted sides, recent history is on our side. The Reds won all three home games against last season's contingent, by an aggregate score of 8-1, as Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham all succumbed.

Furthermore, last month’s hard-fought triumph at Sheffield United was our 10th in a row against newcomers to the Premier League, home and away.

Our latest exclusive digital collectible marks Luton’s historic visit to the Theatre of Dreams this weekend. Claim it now by visiting collectibles.manutd.com or learn more about them at the bottom of this page.

Firstly, enjoy highlights of last season’s home wins over the newly promoted sides.

UNITED 3-0 NOTTINGHAM FOREST, 27 DECEMBER 2022

Our final home game of 2022 ended in satisfying fashion thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred. Rashford’s curled effort, after he was picked out by Christian Eriksen from a corner, came during his run of scoring in nine consecutive home games. Four minutes later, Martial finished a brilliant counter-attack before Fred added gloss by firing in a late third. Forest had a goal disallowed just before the break but Erik ten Hag’s men were good value for the three points.

UNITED 3-0 BOURNEMOUTH, 3 JANUARY 2023

Just seven days later, it was Bournemouth’s turn to visit OT but the Reds recorded an identical result to get the new year off to a positive start. Rashford was on target again late in the game, converting Bruno Fernandes’ square ball, after Casemiro had guided home his first Old Trafford goal and Luke Shaw had finished a thrilling team move early in the second period to put United in control. This was our fourth consecutive clean sheet since the season resumed following the World Cup.

UNITED 2-1 FULHAM, 28 MAY 2023

Our final league game of the campaign was a much closer affair, with Ten Hag’s side having to come from behind to secure third place in the final table. Kenny Tete nodded in Willian’s corner to give the Cottagers a 19th-minute lead and Aleksandar Mitrovic missed a glorious opportunity to double the visitors’ lead when David De Gea saved his penalty. Jadon Sancho levelled from close range five minutes before half-time and Fernandes latched on to a superb reverse pass from Fred to complete the turnaround. It completed a clean sweep of six wins over the newly promoted sides last season, a feat we’d last achieved in 2011/12.
