Tyrell Malacia makes competitive return

Tuesday 12 November 2024 22:57

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia made his return to competitive action on Tuesday evening, playing 45 minutes for the club’s Under-21s.

The full-back, who has not featured for United since May 2023 due to a long-term injury, completed the first half of our EFL Trophy tie away to Huddersfield Town, before he was replaced by Harry Amass as part of a pre-planned substitution at half-time.

Travis Binnion’s young Reds were eventually beaten 4-1 by the senior League One outfit, in what was our third and final group-stage outing of this season’s EFL Trophy.

Our summary includes the key details from Tuesday's EFL Trophy tie against the League One side.

Malacia started the tie at the John Smith’s Stadium in a familiar left-back role and was an audibly vocal presence in the backline throughout his time on the pitch.

Our no.12, backed by the several hundred United fans that made the journey across the Pennines, notably sprung a dangerous counter-attack from a defensive corner as we searched for an opener and celebrated our leveller with his team-mates shortly before his withdrawal at the interval.

Victor Musa got us on back on level terms following Ben Wiles’s first-half opener, prior to the hosts scoring three times after the break to emerge victorious.
Tyrell’s appearance in West Yorkshire marks a major step in his journey back to first-team action, having last been involved for the senior side in our final game of the 2022/23 Premier League season, at home to Fulham.

He was welcomed back into team training in September this year and has since been stepping up his rehabilitation programme at Carrington.

While the 25-year-old will continue to be managed carefully as he looks to make a return to first-team action, this is a hugely positive advance for him after an extended spell on the sidelines.

It is great to see you back on the pitch, Ty.
