Under-21s: United v Arsenal

Saturday 23 September 2023 15:19

Manchester United's second-half dominance wasn't quite enough to secure a Premier League 2 point at Carrington, as Arsenal weathered the storm to eventually see out their 4-2 victory.

The visitors took a comfortable advantage into the break at Carrington. Arsenal's 13th-minute opener was unlucky for United goalkeeper Elyh Harrison as Lino Sousa wrong-footed him with a strike on the counter-attack. The Reds were also unfortunate not to grab an equaliser almost immemdiately when Omari Forson's attempt hit the post.

Jack Henry-Francis doubled the Gunners' lead in the 28th minute with a wickedly deflected effort, shortly before Sousa grabbed his second goal to make it 3-0.

Although Arsenal went further ahead through Khayon Edwards, United were given an opportunity to reduce the arrears when captain Shola Shoretire was brought down in the penalty area.

Mejia fired his spot-kick off target but the young Spaniard made amends moments later when he scored from open play during first-half injury time.

Although the deficit was further reduced in the 58th minute by Omari Forson - who also hit the post in the first half - the Gunners held firm and headed home to north London with an away win in the bag.
