U21s: United v Everton

Saturday 11 February 2023 15:59

Manchester United Under-21s defeated Everton 4-1 in Saturday afternoon’s Premier League 2 encounter at Leigh Sports Village.

Joe Hugill gave United the lead in the 29th minute, with that advantage doubled soon after through Omari Forson.

Liam Higgins got one back for Everton before half-time, ensuring the score was 2-1 at the break.

Forson got his second of the encounter, late on, to restore the two-goal lead, prior to completing his hat-trick and the scoring with a stoppage-time penalty.
The young Reds were all smiles after Hugill's opener at Leigh Sports Village.
United had the better of the early chances, with Dan Gore lively in the opening stages, twice setting up opportunities for Mateo Mejia that unfortunately came to nothing.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, the young Reds had a reward for their efforts. Premier League 2’s Player of the Month for January, Hugill, connected with a cross from Mejia and picked out the bottom corner to open the scoring.
Five minutes later, that lead was doubled through Forson. United had garnered energy from breaking the deadlock and utilised that to full advantage, with Forson on the front foot to come inside from the left and power an effort across the goalkeeper, and into the net.

The visitors made a strong response though, and halved the deficit soon after, when Higgins was in the right place at the right time to connect with Matthew Apter’s low ball across the box.

Mejia went close to restoring that two-goal advantage just before the interval, but saw his latest effort diverted from the goal by keeper Zan-Luk Leban.
Forson celebrated his first-half strike in familiar fashion!
After the break, Mejia was again thwarted after his volley was deflected behind, having initially been found following strong work down the right from Marc Jurado.

At the other end, Francis Okoronkwo went close for the visitors, but fired over his attempt at an equaliser.

In the 78th minute, Forson was on the scoresheet again, making it 3-1. Jurado’s ball found its way to the winger, who created some space before picking out the top right-hand corner.
The youngster's team-mates were delighted to see him among the goals.
The 18-year-old then had the opportunity to complete a hat-trick in stoppage time, when the young Reds were awarded a penalty, after Hugill was brought down in the box.

Forson stepped up and powered his spot-kick into the bottom right-hand corner, to make sure of the Premier League 2 points and a sixth successive win for our Under-21s in all competitions.
Our Under-21s' next outing comes in the league, a week on Monday (20 February), away to Crystal Palace.
