United Briefing: Reds congratulate Amad

Friday 12 March 2021 08:00

Manchester United’s first-team squad have been sending their congratulations to Amad after the young winger scored his maiden senior goal for the Reds on Thursday night.

While it was a disappointing night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in the 1-1 draw with AC Milan, Amad’s outstanding header was undoubtedly the highlight.

Just minutes after his introduction at half-time in the last-16 tie, our no.19 sprinted in behind the Milan defence and was picked out by an inch-perfect Bruno Fernandes pass.

Amad then had the presence of mind to notice Gianluigi Donnarumma off his line and, with an unconventional technique, looped the ball with the back of his head over the Rossoneri goalkeeper.

That audacious header sent social media into a mini-meltdown with many comparisons made between the goal and that of Javier Hernandez in 2010 against Stoke City.

Our first-team players were also keen on sharing their enthusiasm at the header. Marcus Rashford was the first to tweet during the game, and was then followed afterwards by Fernandes and Brandon Williams.

“Frustrating to concede a last-minute goal but there’s still much to play next week. Congrats @Amaddiallo_19 on your first goal,” Bruno said on social media. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba used Instagram to congratulate the youngster.

Speaking after the game, Harry Maguire also shared his thoughts on the Ivorian’s development: “He’s a young boy and he has got a big future,” the skipper told club media.

“Obviously coming on at half time and trying to impress and he scores really early, and that gives him confidence. You can see day in, day out in training that he is really starting to improve on his intensity and his tempo of his play. He is going to be a big player for us.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added his view in the post-match press conference. “I think the pass was incredible [from Bruno] so I think the pass, more or less, made the goal,” he said.

“The keeper’s position as well. A flick-on is probably the only thing he can do, and should do, but perfect timing and little weight on the flick so it’s a great moment for the kid.”

WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?

The day was obviously dominated by the Milan encounter that evening which, as mentioned above, finished 1-1. It means that we’ll head to the San Siro needing at least an away goal in order to progress to the quarter-finals, with the second leg to take place next Thursday night.

After the game, Ole shared an update on Rashford and Anthony Martial. Marcus missed Thursday’s game through injury, while our French no.9 picked up a knock in the match and was replaced at half-time.

Elsewhere, we also asked fans to select which Milan legend from yesteryear you would loved to have seen in a United shirt.
