Eric Bailly

United Briefing: Bailly explains Roma approach

Wednesday 05 May 2021 08:00

Eric Bailly says there will be no change in Manchester United's mentality for the second leg of our Europa League semi-final, despite the Reds being 6-2 up against Roma.

It’s a similar situation to the one we faced in our last-32 tie against Real Sociedad earlier in the competition when we were four goals better off after the first leg after an excellent 4-0 victory away from home.

Bailly featured in both legs against the La Liga outfit as United played out a 0-0 draw back at Old Trafford to comfortably progress.

In the current scenario, Roma at least have two away goals they could potentially build on and with a place in the Europa League final at stake, our no.3 insists the team are fully focused on getting the job done to seal a spot in Gdansk on 26 May.

“It was a good performance [at Old Trafford]. We started not bad, but then there were two goals for them. After that, in the second half, we came back strong, we won the game and it was a good win,” Eric told us.

“Six goals is not easy [to score] against Roma, it’s a very important step for the final, but it’s only one step. Now, we are focused for the second game in Italy and we want to win and do well and get to the final.

“We won 6-2 but in Italy we are not going there just to wait for a draw,” he added. “No, we go to win again, that’s our mentality and what we need to have to be able to get to the final.”

United’s second-half fightback was another example of the team’s resilience and spirit, and our superb away record all season, particularly in the Europa League, will give the team plenty of confidence ahead of Thursday night’s test.

Asked what he believes has been key to our great run on the road, Bailly says: “I think it’s our focus and also we have trained well. If you train well then you are ready for the game and with this mentality we have been able to raise the level of our game.

“On the day [against Roma] we conceded two quick goals, but the most important thing was the comeback. We came back from the first half strongly and showed good mentality. We scored many goals and won the game and that was very important.”
