Bruno Fernandes has been personally congratulated by former United great Robin van Persie, after it was confirmed that the Portuguese had been named the 2020/21 Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

It's our no.18's second such award in less than 18 months, since joining United from Sporting in January 2020.

The impact made by Bruno has staggered many in world football, and Dutch legend van Persie is no exception. Indeed, after the news broke, van Persie took to Twitter to convey his personal admiration for what Fernandes has achieved.

Congratulations, Bruno Fernandes! Video

Congratulations, Bruno Fernandes!

This is why our brilliant no.18 was voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2020/21...

“Well deserved, what a player! Instant impact since the day he joined!” wrote van Persie, who famously scored 30 goals in his first season at United in 2012/13.

The ex-Arsenal man was our Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year himself in that very campaign, which ended with the club obtaining its record-extending 20th league title, and, like Bruno, also won Goal of the Season, for his stunning volley against Aston Villa.

Van Persie left the club in 2015 after scoring 58 goals in 105 appearances, and is still fondly remembered by Reds everywhere.

Bruno was clearly thrilled that Robin had reached out to him, as he quickly took to his own social media account on Twitter to respond.

“Thank you legend!! Means a lot coming from you,” he replied.

Fernandes has made just 79 appearances in the shirt, but already has 40 goals and 26 assists — a haul that his seen him compared to 1990s legend Eric Cantona, who transformed the club’s fortunes after a surprise transfer from Leeds United in 1992.
