Europa League: United's quarter-final opponents confirmed

Wednesday 05 August 2020 20:43

Manchester United have learned who their Europa League quarter-final opponents will be next Monday (10 August), after wrapping up a 7-1 aggregate victory over LASK in the last 16.

The result over the Austrian outfit means we will now head to Germany for the last eight, with FC Copenhagen awaiting the Reds’ challenge in Cologne on Monday.

Having also been in action on Wednesday evening, the Danish side overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir with three unanswered goals at home to progress 3-1 on aggregate.

Our quarter-final with Copenhagen will be a one-legged affair, as will all the remaining matches in the tournament, and takes place 365 days after our season began, on the opening day of the Premier League against Chelsea.

It is the first time in our opponents' history that they have reached the last eight of a major European competition, and they did so thanks to a brace from Jonas Wind and another strike from Rasmus Falk in the Danish capital.

Among the side that beat Basaksehir was former Red Guillermo Varela, who could be reunited with United in Germany. Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was among those who lined up for us during the last of only two meetings with Copenhagen – both of which came in the group stage of the Champions League in 2006/07.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, two other last-16 ties were decided in the Europa League, with Shakhtar Donetsk securing a 5-1 aggregate win against Wolfsburg and Internazionale beating Getafe 2-0 in a single-legged affair in Germany after the first leg was postponed.

Ukrainian champions Shakhtar will face either Basel or Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarters, while Inter await the winners of Bayer Leverkusen and Rangers. The remaining matches in the last 16 will all take place tomorrow (Thursday).
