Ryan Mason

What's Tottenham's team news?

Wednesday 26 April 2023 14:56

New Tottenham Hotspur interim head coach Ryan Mason isn't sure whether goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will be fit enough to play against Manchester United on Thursday.

The World Cup-winning stopper is approaching 450 games for Spurs, but Sunday's heavy loss at Newcastle is one he won't look back on with any fondness.

Lloris conceded five goals in 21 first-half minutes before being substituted at half-time for Fraser Forster. Cristian Stellini, who departed his role as the Lilywhites' interim boss on Monday, explained Lloris was struggling with a muscle injury.

The 36-year-old club captain conducted media duties following the 6-1 defeat at St James' Park, describing the team's performance as 'very embarrassing'. Tottenham's players have since offered to reimburse the fans who travelled to the North East at the weekend.

The appointment of former midfielder Mason for his second spell in charge could provide home fans with a boost when United come to town on Thursday, but it's not clear whether it will be Lloris or Forster between the sticks.

Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet, who were unused substitutes on Tyneside, will be reviewed during training on Wednesday afternoon.

Davies suffered a hamstring injury during the 3-3 draw with Southampton in March, but Lenglet has been a regular starter in recent weeks.

The France international, who is at Spurs on a season-long loan from Barcelona, was substituted early during the 3-2 defeat at home to Bournemouth but recovered in time to be involved with the squad at the weekend.

“Ben has come off the back of quite a long muscle injury and Clem, there is a problem with his foot and he had to come off in a recent game, so we’ll see how they all react after training today,” Mason said.

Lucas Moura is back from a three-match ban, but his fellow Brazilian Emerson Royal is set to miss the game as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

Rodrigo Bentancur is out for the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in February, while Yves Bissouma (ankle) and Ryan Sessegnon (thigh) are also sidelined.

Mason’s objectives are clear, as he returns to a post he occupied for seven games in the spring of 2021.

The 31-year-old lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City after replacing Jose Mourinho, but Spurs won four of his six league games in charge to pip Arsenal to a European spot and finish the campaign on a high.

He’s clearly hoping for similar this time around, with Sunday’s visit to Liverpool also on the horizon.

“I think from my point of view at the moment is to get some sort of energy and some sort of positivity back into the group,” he said.

“But not only the group, the fans and the club have to be realistic as well when you have two training sessions/three training sessions before two games.

“It's hard to change a great deal but I would hope and expect towards the end of the season that everyone, not only inside but outside, will see my stamp and our stamp on the group.”
