Manchester United and Sweden defender Victor Lindelof has expressed his shock and offered his condolences to the victims of Monday evening’s terror attack in Belgium.

Two Swedish nationals were killed and a third was injured in Brussels by a man who was later shot dead by police.

Sweden were playing Belgium in a Euro 2024 qualifier at the King Baudouin Stadium in the city, but the game was suspended at half-time and spectators were asked to wait inside the venue before being evacuated.

Around 400 Sweden fans spent the night in hotels under police protection.

Lindelof has been captain of Sweden since 2021.

“I’m shocked and devastated by the terrible incidents in Brussels with the cold-hearted attacks on our fellow Swedes,” Lindelof wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I’m lost for words for the cruelty and inhumanity, I want to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected.

“At the same time, my thoughts go out to all the supporters in Belgium last night, no one should ever go to a game of football and feel unsafe when supporting their team.”

Lindelof is the captain of the Swedish national team and he was involved in conversations around the suspension of the fixture, which was level at 1-1.

In a post-match press conference, Victor explained how the decision was unanimous among the players given the security situation in the city.

“I talked to the other players in the team about how they felt, and then I felt that I wanted to talk to the Belgian players,” Victor said. “I explained how we looked at the situation. We were very clear that we did not want to continue playing and the Belgian players were completely on board with that.

“There are players who have family and friends there, and we wanted to take care of our supporters.

“Those who had family or friends here wanted to try to get in touch with those people directly so that they were well. People got worried but our security team explained it very well.”
