Lindelof: We want to finish the season strongly

Wednesday 27 April 2022 07:00

Victor Lindelof says it is “very important” for Manchester United to finish the campaign in the most positive way possible across the remaining four matches.

Recent defeats to Everton, Liverpool and most recently at the weekend, Arsenal, have significantly dented United’s ambitions of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.

While it is still mathematically possible for the club to progress into European football’s elite club competition over the coming weeks, it is very much an uphill task with the destiny now out of our own hands.

Despite that, Lindelof insists that the Reds remain focused on concluding the season as strongly as possible over our final four Premier League fixtures, starting with Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

“I think it’s very, very important for ourselves to try to do that,” asserts Sweden's captain, in the latest edition of United Review, our official matchday programme.

“This season obviously hasn’t been good enough and of course us as players take responsibility for that.

“We just want to try to finish this season strongly and try to win these remaining games.”
After the midweek meeting with Chelsea, the Blues’ west London rivals Brentford will make the trip up to M16 next Monday night. That game will kick off United's May schedule, before our season closes out with away trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace later in the month.

As 2021/22 reaches its finishing straight, Victor has reflected on our campaign and highlighted a particular area for improvement in our remaining fixtures and beyond.

“I think we need to find more stability in the way we’re playing, and we need to win more games,” he said.

“We’ve been winning one game, then drawing one, then we lose one, then we win two games… we need to be more consistent in everything we do.

“That’s the main thing we need to get better at because sometimes I feel it’s too easy for opponents to play through us and create chances against us.

“Of course, when it’s tough you always have to stick together and work even harder,” our no.2 adds.

“We tried, even if it’s been a very difficult season for us, and we’re still there fighting for top four.

“We want to be higher up of course and competing for titles, but we need more consistency, and we always have to stick together as a group and believe in ourselves.”

Also in his United Review interview, which can be found in full inside Thursday’s edition of our official matchday programme, Lindelof also had a message for the club's supporters.

“Of course we want to perform in these last few games and win them,” he says.

“We want to make the fans happy, we know it’s been frustrating for them, so we want to play as well as we can.

“We want to thank them all for their support and then next season we have a new manager coming in, and we will perform better and compete for trophies.”
