A day the Rooney boys will never forget

When your dad is Derby County manager and Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, you’re bound to have an unforgettable experience when the two teams collide.

That is exactly what happened for three of the four Rooney boys on Sunday afternoon, when Kai, Kit and Klay all watched their legendary old man lead his Rams against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reds.

The pre-season friendly at Pride Park was played in glorious sunshine and resulted in a competitive 2-1 win for United, thanks to goals from our exciting forwards Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri.

Derby halved the deficit late on courtesy of a Colin Kazim-Richards strike and, despite the loss, a relaxed Rooney admitted afterwards he was pleased by his makeshift team’s performance.

Occasions like Sunday’s have a friendly atmosphere in every sense of the word and, as fans have now seen via Wayne’s Instagram account, his children had an amazing time after the final whistle.

Wayne has shared pictures of his boys meeting up with Juan Mata, who gave away his shirt and later commented: “It was great to see you and your kids Wazza!”
The three delighted Rooney boys also met Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe and Tom Heaton, who were more than happy to pose for pictures.

The best is saved for last in Rooney’s post: a brilliant picture of his young lads with former United team-mate and current Reds boss Solskjaer.
“Great performance from the lads in our first friendly,” wrote our former captain on Instagram. “Lots of positives to take and great to see some of things we’ve been working on.

“Always a pleasure to see Ole, the team and all the staff at @ManchesterUnited.”
