Who deserves to win Player of the Month?

Wednesday 02 March 2022 10:00

The race for February's Player of the Month award promises to go to the wire, with three popular and outstanding Reds in the running.

Our three nominees, Anthony Elanga, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, are all relatively new to the first team, and have arguably had their best months to date.

Sancho and Varane joined in the summer, and both are now hitting top gear after acclimatising to life in M16, while Academy graduate Elanga continues to impress everyone with his dynamic, precocious contributions.

But who should you vote for?

Who is your Player of the Month for February 2022?

Whereas in the past, club legends like David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated our polls, this one looks like it will be a tight contest.

Each player has cause for optimism: Varane has been near flawless since overcoming his recent injury troubles, Sancho has been a constant menace in attack with his goals and assists, while Elanga has twice come off the bench to score priceless goals.

It's such a tough choice that we thought we'd ask three Reds who know what they're talking about: staff writers (and season-ticket holders) Joe Ganley and Harry Robinson, plus two-time Champions League winner Wes Brown.

Have a read on to find out which player they're backing – and don't forget to cast your own vote in our poll above!
ELANGA IS THE MAN OF THE MOMENT

“Anthony Elanga has been absolutely brilliant. It's just the energy he brings – he starts it from the front, he tries to run in behind, he's a player we need at the moment. He puts pressure on defenders and he has scored some good goals for us as well. As a young player, you want him to do all the best because you know how hard it can be, and he has definitely been a spark for us. He is somebody that we need at the moment.”

SANCHO IS MR CONSISTENCY

“Jadon has been the consistent stand-out player of February. His two assists in the win against Leeds were a fair reward for a month of creating chances aplenty from the wing. As a young player making his Premier League debut, I think many predicted it would take some time for Sancho to settle in at United and then to kick on and show the same quality he displayed in the Bundesliga. We are seeing that now. The way he can manipulate the ball in tight spaces is wonderful, but what really stands out is his decision-making. If the opportunity isn't there to take a man on or play in the final ball, he'll retain possession and keep the pressure on the opposition defence until that opportunity is there. Nothing is rushed, but when the moment comes, it's all in a flash of speed. It's great to watch. Two assists and a goal this month are good, but everyone who has watched United regularly will know those numbers should be far higher given the level of performance.”

RAPHA IS WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOLD

“Now he's injury-free, it feels like we're seeing Raphael Varane at his top-tier best. I've never had any doubts about him whatsoever once he's on the pitch, and it's simply an exquisite pleasure to watch him go about his business. Brave, smart, unflappable, elegant... the list could go on. It's hard to calculate just how much he benefits all departments of the team, given the way he anticipates and nullifies danger before it has the chance to really materialise. In what is proving a challenging period for the club, Varane's experience and game intelligence are worth their weight in gold.”

- Joe Ganley, Senior Staff Writer
