Wes Brown pinpoints his one career regret

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has revealed there is only one moment in his entire career that he regrets.

The much-decorated former Red reminisced about his time with the Reds during an exclusive interview with our official magazine Inside United.

There were so many highlights from his time at Old Trafford, including being part of two Champions League-winning squads and providing the assist for Cristiano Ronaldo's header in the 2008 final against Chelsea, in Moscow.

Twice a winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, he also won five Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, before joining Sunderland in 2011.

The one incident he regrets came in November 2002, as United suffered a shock defeat to Zalaegerszeg in a Champons League qualifier.

Sir Alex's men won convincingly, 5-0 in the second leg at home, to progress comfortably in the end but were on the end of the shock reverse in Hungary.

And Brown's experience was more painful than most at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium.

For Wes, he was hurt in a challenge early in proceedings, and forced out of action for a long spell with a broken ankle.

He admits it was a tackle he should never have made.

“I won’t change anything," he said of his career. "Actually, there’s only one thing I would change. I injured myself in the Champions League qualifying game one year, I broke my ankle.

"Basically, me and this guy went for a tackle but the ball was already out of play. But we both did it anyway and I broke my ankle by doing it, which set me back again for a while. So, except for that, I wouldn’t change anything and I don’t think I can really change the injuries as well because, obviously, that gives you a mental strength to go again when you come back next time."

When it was suggested he was the sort of player who never pulled out of any challenge, Wes replied: “But it was out of play! So it was a big difference! But, yeah, he kept going and I kept going and I just remember thinking: ‘Oh my God.'

"So I had to go through it and, you know, I’ve still got the screw in my right ankle, to be fair. I actually had to have an operation which set me back another three or months, which is not ideal.”
