The FA Cup: Which Red springs to mind?

Friday 15 March 2024 12:24

Which one Manchester United player springs to mind when you hear the words ‘FA Cup’?

We put the question out to supporters on social media, ahead of our quarter-final clash with Liverpool this weekend, and the varied responses rekindled great memories from our past in the competition.

Cup-winning captains and goalscoring heroes are favoured themes of the fan choices so far, and the latter is likely to be why former Reds skipper Gary Neville has opted for the great Norman Whiteside, having got involved via Instagram.

‘Big Norm’ netted 10 FA Cup goals in total for United – including in the triumphant 1983 final replay against Brighton & Hove Albion, and the winner to beat Everton for the trophy two years later – and therefore it is no surprise to see his name feature frequently among the continuing comments.

Phil Neville has also joined in the discussion, opting for King Eric Cantona!

Check out a selection of the responses below..

Whiteside's winner in '85 is his most famous United goal - listen to the roar!
Saribas Jack: “Lee Martin scored the only goal in FA Cup final in 1990. Sir Alex got his first trophy. The rest is history.”

Scott Martin: “Bryan Robson, winning captain three times.”

Keith Merritt: “King Eric Cantona. FA Cup winner v Liverpool 1996, being there seeing it live was one of the best days of my life.”
@191219n: “Roy Keane because he won the cup four times including in the Treble year.”

@curtishaven: “Norman Whiteside! I had United’s greatest FA Cup victories on VHS as a kid!”

@a2shred: “For me, Mark Hughes. The first FA Cup final I watched was United against Chelsea and he scored, and that stuck with me.”

@smoggy_owen_: “Ryan Giggs tearing Arsenal apart.”
Roy Keane lifted the prestigious trophy four times in his United career.
@dusivri: “Stuart Pearson. Old enough to remember the 1977 FA Cup final. Scored a beauty past Ray Clemence in a 2-1 win against Liverpool. Stopped their Treble aspirations. Win-win.”

@gregwil76: “There should only be one answer – Les Sealey.”

@reddyornot: “Gotta be Giggsy but I’d give Lingard a special mention.”

@birkett2434: “Paul Scholes, United’s greatest unsung hero.”

Lingard cemented his place in United's FA Cup history by producing the decisive moment in the 2016 final.
