Who won Man of the Match against Villa?

Sunday 11 February 2024 19:42

Manchester United made it three Premier League wins in a row with another late triumph on the road away at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Reds began our sequence of consecutive top-flight victories 10 days ago, away at Wolves, when Kobbie Mainoo scored a magnificent stoppage-time winner - and it was another Academy graduate in Scott McTominay who won us the game late on at Villa Park.

Rasmus Hojlund had volleyed in coolly for the opener after just 17 minutes, before Villa scored a 67th-minute equaliser from Douglas Luiz, but Erik ten Hag's men put together a sustained spell of pressure late on which led to McTominay's much-merited decisive goal.

Our victory at Villa Park now means just five points separate us from fifth-placed Villa in the Premier League standings, in our pursuit of Champions League qualification for the 2024/25 campaign, and a number of our Reds played a prominent part in this vital win - aside from the two goalscorers.

But which player caught fans' eyes the most in the voting for the Man of the Match prize? Read on to find out the results of our poll...

Who was United's Man of the Match against Aston Villa?

Andre Onana earned the majority of voting fans' recognition for his performance at Villa Park - with 24 per cent of the vote going the way of the Cameroon international.

Our goalkeeper made a commendable eight saves from the 10 shots on target he faced in the Midlands, including a couple of sensational reaction saves.

Onana notably kept out Ollie Watkins' shot with an instinctive reaction save from point-blank range within minutes of the half-time restart, having also tipped over a fierce John McGinn drive in the first half.

Not far behind in fans' thoughts was striker Hojlund, who got 18 per cent of the vote as he continued his hot streak in front of goal against Unai Emery's side.

The forward has now netted five goals in his last five Premier League games, taking his tally to the season for 11 goals in all competitions.

The Dane put the Reds in front after 17 minutes by volleying low through the legs of Emi Martinez in the Villa goal and proved a strong focal point in attack all afternoon.

Goalscorers Rasmus and Scott proved popular choices among fans as our Man of the Match against Aston Villa.

Harry Maguire provided the assist for that Hojlund strike, having nodded down from Bruno Fernandes' corner-kick delivery - an area where he excelled all afternoon as he proved a huge threat for us at attacking set-pieces.

Maguire was imperious at the back too, though, building on his return to the side last weekend as he again looked impressive, this time partnering Raphael Varane in central defence.

The England international earned 16 per cent of fans' votes, with Scott McTominay (12 per cent) and Diogo Dalot (10 per cent) also earning respectable shares of the voting.

However, it was ultimately Onana who was named our Man of the Match.

It's the third time Andre has been recognised by fans for the award - having also claimed the prize in narrow home successes over Wolves and FC Copenhagen earlier in the season.

Congratulations on a fine performance, Andre!
