David De Gea.

Which outfield position would De Gea play?

If David De Gea could ditch his gloves and come out of goal, what position would he play in?

This was a question posed to our no.1 by Jack D in our latest Fans' Q&A session, as he wondered if the Spaniard had always been a keeper and which outfield position would suit him best.

We know goalies often loved to play elsewhere in their youth and David is no exception. He has told us before that he used to be a striker in the past.

In 2017, he told United Review, our official matchday programme:  "I played up front at school in Madrid, then at a soccer school there too. I used to combine the two roles and play as a striker and then in goal. But, in the end, I realised I was a better keeper."

However, now things are different. The 31-year-old believes he would be better suited to operating in a different position, one with a lot of responsibility for the way the team plays.

“When I was young, I used to play outfield as well," he admitted. "Not just as a keeper. So which position I would like to play if I was an outfielder? I’m not sure but probably midfield. A no.6 trying to take the ball and make some good passes.

“Yes, a holding midfielder, having the ball and trying to make the team play better.”

The keeper was posed questions from supporters based around the world and opened up on his interests away from the field, as well as detailing his ambitions with United.
