Which position does Mazraoui prefer?
Noussair Mazraoui has outlined the major differences between his two main positions within Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim's formation.
The Morocco international, who will be representing the home nation in the Africa Cup of Nations before the year out, is usually considered for one of the three central defensive roles, primarily on the right, or the wing-back position on that flank.
He can also operate on the left and even appeared as a no.10 under former boss Erik ten Hag in one Europa League tie against Fenerbahce, highlighting his great versatility.
In an interview to be published in full by United Review, the official matchday programme for Monday's return to Premier League action against Everton, the 28-year-old was asked which role he liked best and whether he was a defender who appreciated that art most.
"I always used to do both," he replied. "So, whenever I was a right-back, I always liked to do the attacking but I also liked to defend, to catch my opponent, one against one, and just win those duels.
"For me, it's also a nice feeling so I think, yeah, those two positions just suit me and I don't really have a preference."
Mazraoui played at wing-back in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur last time out and is aware of the increased attacking responsibility that brings.
"Of course, they are different positions, so they ask something different from you," he explained. "In [terms of] attacking, and in defence as well.
"I think, as one of the centre-backs, it's more defending, controlling the game, controlling the counters of the opponent. And more building up. So that is basically what your job is during the game.
"I think, as a wing-back, it's more going up and down. So you have more of both sides. A little bit more defending but also you have to be decisive because you come a lot into the last third of the pitch, the last-third part of the pitch. And that asks again something different from you than being at centre-back because then you have to give like an assist or be decisive or give a great ball, where it comes to a chance.
"So, yeah, I think those things are the differences between those certain positions."
