Who will be our Fantasy United star v Liverpool?

Thursday 29 August 2024 14:43

Making a key contribution in a Manchester v Liverpool game is often remembered well into the future, such is the magnitude of the fixture.

Amad crafted out immediate-hero status when his low shot trickled into the net to decide March’s dramatic Emirates FA Cup quarter-final tie, while the respective natures of the goals scored by Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in the following month’s league meeting mean they are also likely to be brought up in conversations about the rivalry for some time to come.

The two aforementioned battles at Old Trafford last season were memorable to say the least and, as the next instalment of the historic duel prepares to take place this Sunday in M16, it may be worth considering who could emerge as United’s next big-game player in the storied head-to-head when picking your Fantasy United team.

How to follow United v Liverpool

It's a big one on Sunday as Erik's Reds face our fierce rivals, at Old Trafford.

A look at the data from our new fantasy football game has given us an idea of who fans are expecting to take on that mantle this weekend, judging by which players are most selected as Ultra-Rare picks for the 16:00 BST kick-off.

Every team contains slots for five of your digital Player Trading Cards, representing every member of Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad, including one for an item of an Ultra-Rare speciality.

If chosen in their correct position, these gold-coloured cards can score triple points, meaning they are the most powerful in the game – and therefore a potential indicator as to who our supporters are backing to score big on Sunday afternoon.

At the time of writing, no Ultra-Rare card is in more Fantasy United line-ups than captain Fernandes.

The midfielder was unlucky not to open his goalscoring account for the Premier League season in our first game against Fulham – having had several dangerous attempts denied by goalkeeper Bernd Leno – and would have had his first assist of the campaign at Brighton had Alejandro Garnacho’s goalbound shot not been helped over the goalline by the offside right knee of Joshua Zirkzee.

Fernandes was at the heart of everything attacking for the Reds in the two matches, from the centre-forward position he has been playing in, and has now been handed key responsibility by the majority of our fantasy managers for Sunday’s match.

If you're backing Bruno, you'll be happy to know he’s got history on his side too – no player would have earned more points than his nine in the aforementioned Premier League clash against Liverpool, after he scored our first goal in April's eventual 2-2 draw.

The skipper's midfield counterpart Mainoo would have bagged the same total, having also got on the scoresheet, and is the fourth most selected Ultra-Rare player for this weekend, behind Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Zirkzee completes the top five, ahead of our return to Old Trafford, just over a fortnight on from his opening-night winner against Fulham.

Will any of the most selected Ultra-Rare players be your pick this weekend? Submit your Fantasy United team, ahead of Sunday's 14:30 BST deadline!
