Who was United's Man of the Match?

Sunday 31 July 2022 19:43

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho was voted Man of the Match for his performance against Rayo Vallecano.

The Argentina Under-20 international was lively from the outset against the Spanish side and produced a number of eye-catching dribbles that unsettled the visiting defence.

There was also a moment when the left-winger recovered to make a timely slide-tackle close to half-time that will have no doubt pleased manager Erik ten Hag.

Garnacho consults the boss.

The 18-year-old's bold display against a team from his birthplace of Madrid earned praise from Ten Hag afterwards, who told MUTV: "He played pretty well and that's hopeful. He is just a teenager but his performance was really good."

It was a first outing of the pre-season campaign for Garnacho, who did pick up valuable experience by being part of the Tour 2022 squad, and has had a great record at Old Trafford when representing the club's Academy - not least in last season's FA Youth Cup final.

The exciting forward picked up nearly half of the vote (48 per cent) to finish well clear at the top of our poll in the United App.

Amad, who scored for the Reds soon after coming off the bench, was second with 11 per cent. Meanwhile, Ethan Laird, another of our promising youngsters, was in joint-third spot, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Christian Eriksen.

Lisandro Martinez, the other new boy, was not far away in sixth place.

It will be interesting to see what 2022/23 has in store for Garnacho, with Ten Hag's thoughts turning to next Sunday's Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford (14:00 BST kick-off).

Congratulations, Alejandro, and thanks to everybody who voted in our poll.
