United celebrate.

Who was Man of the Match against Spurs?

Saturday 12 March 2022 20:30

We asked for your vote for Manchester United's Man of the Match against Tottenham and the result was predictably unanimous.

All our goals in the 3-2 victory came from the magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo, who bagged his first Premier League hat-trick since 2008.

Ronaldo slammed in an unstoppable opener to light up the occasion but Spurs hit back and Diogo Dalot needed to head an Eric Dier effort off the line. An equaliser did arrive when Alex Telles was penalised for handball, and Harry Kane stepped up to beat David De Gea from the penalty spot.

The response from the Reds was pretty instant as Jadon Sancho squared unselfishly for Ronaldo to regain the lead with his second, and the visitors' appeals for offside against Sancho proved unfounded after a VAR check.

After the break, Spurs applied some pressure and were rewarded with a second leveller, courtesy of a Harry Maguire own goal. Sergio Reguilon's left-wing cross was diverted in by the United captain with an offside Cristian Romero lurking behind him.

The balance looked to have shifted in the north Londoners' favour but nothing was stopping Ronaldo. The no.7 headed in a corner by Alex Telles to restore the lead at 3-2, before being withdrawn to a standing ovation.

It was impossible to look beyond Ronaldo and the brilliant no.7 picked up a more-than-convincing 92 per cent of the overall vote.

This is the seventh time the 37-year-old has picked up our Man of the Match award since his return to the club, but only the second time in 2022.

Fred, who was excellent throughout in midfield, finished in second spot - but a long way behind on 3 per cent.

Jadon Sancho, our reigning Player of the Month, continued to show his eye-catching form as he finished third.
