Who was our Man of the Match against Omonia?

Thursday 06 October 2022 20:39

Manchester United had to overturn a half-time deficit to beat Omonia Nicosia on Thursday evening, in our first-ever match against Cypriot opposition.

Erik ten Hag's side were in almost complete control for much of the opening half an hour, but fell behind to a shock counter-attack finished off by Karim Ansarifard.

Thankfully, United responded with a dynamic attacking performance after the interval, scoring three goals – all converted by half-time substitutes – to take an important 3-2 win.

There were numerous positive displays, particularly in attack, but who claimed our Man of the Match crown?

The overwhelming winner of our fan poll was Marcus Rashford, who replaced Jadon Sancho at the start of the second half.

The England international had a hand in all three goals the Reds scored in the second 45, delivering two expert finishes and a neat assist for fellow substitute Anthony Martial.

After the match, Ten Hag praised the forward for his willingness to run in behind, which helped United stretch the game. And in front of goal, Rashford was back to his relaxed, composed best.

He claimed a whopping 71 per cent of our vote, far ahead of all of his team-mates.
Second in the voting was Cristiano Ronaldo, who endured a highly frustrating evening in Nicosia, despite a healthy eight shots on goal.

The Portuguese did grab an assist, when his left-footed shot was deflected into Rashford's path in the build-up to our third goal, but a strike of his own eluded him.

But fans clearly responded to Ronaldo's work-rate and desire. The legendary forward was involved in numerous United moves, hit the post and could have had a hat-trick on another night.

He nabbed 11 per cent of the votes.

Eight talking points from Nicosia

What did we notice from United's exciting, come-from-behind win over Omonia at the GSP Stadium?

After Rashford and Ronaldo, there was a three-way tie for third place, with Anthony Martial, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez each claiming four per cent of the vote.

Brazilian duo Casemiro and Antony trailed in joint-fourth. The pair will produce more headline-grabbing United performances, but both worked hard and fought valiantly to turn the game around.

The performance was far from perfect but, after Sunday's disappointing Manchester derby, it was vital the Reds responded with a win.  Thanks to Rashford, in particular, three points were achieved against Omonia, and we now move swiftly on to this weekend's Premier League encounter against Everton.
