Result: United's Man of the Match v Brighton

Monday 20 May 2024 12:00

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has been named our Man of the Match following the 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the Premier League season.

The full-back, who has had an impressive campaign, scored the opening goal at the Amex Stadium as the Reds rounded off the league term with three points on the south coast.

Having found the breakthrough in front of our travelling supporters, Diogo also helped Erik ten Hag’s team register a clean sheet, and subsequently earned a majority 37 per cent of our fan vote on ManUtd.com and in the United App, for his efforts.

The extended cut of our south-coast trip to sunny Brighton is now available...

The Portugal international, who will be in boss Roberto Martinez’s thinking as he prepares to name his squad for this summer’s European Championship, has played at both right and left full-back this season, and featured from the latter side of the defence in Sunday’s triumph.

From there, our no.20 was able to provide width and, alternatively, come inside to add an extra body centrally when needed, during a fluid performance in which he linked up well with his winger, Alejandro Garnacho.
While defensive duties were his primary focus, Diogo was also a threat as he stretched the Brighton defence, with runs from deep areas. That was how he got his goal in the 73rd minute, having powered forward, before taking down Casemiro’s deflected pass in behind the backline and keeping his composure to slot past Seagulls goalkeeper Jason Steele.

Having got the breakthrough in the closing stages, Dalot helped the Reds to keep Brighton from scoring themselves across the 90 minutes – despite the hosts applying pressure either side of half-time, in head coach Roberto De Zerbi’s final game at the club.

Second to Diogo in our latest star-performer poll was fellow goalscorer Rasmus Hojlund (18 per cent), who came off the bench on the hour mark and went on to make it 2-0 with a brilliant right-footed finish, following a neat interchange with Christian Eriksen outside the penalty area.

The man who Hojlund replaced, Bruno Fernandes, finished fourth (11 per cent) narrowly behind Casemiro in third (12 per cent), who set up Dalot’s opener having made a crucial goal-line intervention earlier in the second half, to deny Joao Pedro from opening the scoring.

Congratulations to Diogo on winning the award for the first time this season, and thank you to everyone who voted.
