Who was Man of the Match v Ipswich?
Manchester United had to settle for a point in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge as the Reds’ new head coach.
Marcus Rashford’s opening goal inside 90 seconds promised plenty, fresh from the anticipation that had dominated the build-up to this game, but it was a tough encounter that followed at Portman Road, with Omari Hutchinson’s leveller just before half-time enough to force a 1-1 draw.
While we were unable to reinstate our lead thereafter, the Reds showed signs of implementing the new ideas that Ruben has promised supporters he will bring to the table.
Appearing to set up with three central defenders and wing backs on either side, with a box midfield and lone striker ahead, it was encouraging to see several of our players settling into some unfamiliar roles.
Check out who caught the eye of our supporters, with the results of our Man of the Match poll below…
With a number of key stops during the match, Andre Onana was the man selected by 60 per cent of fans casting their vote in our post-match poll.
The goalkeeper made a string of stops in the contest, denying Sammie Szmodics from the edge of the box, early in the first half, before a pair of impressive stops to keep Liam Delap at bay, either side of the interval. The first was perhaps his best stop of the game, with a strong right arm to keep out an effort from close range, before standing tall in the way of a close-range flick after the half-time restart.
Not only adept with his hands, Onana showed his quality with his feet too, looking comfortable playing out from the back, which was noted by boss Ruben Amorim in his post-match interview: "A goalkeeper is so important in one team. When we need it, Onana was there. With the ball, he was very good, and he didn’t choose all the time long balls, he tried to connect. So it was a great game from Andre."
Amad was next in the voting, impressing at both ends of the pitch as he was tasked with a right-wing back role, earning 21 per cent of the vote.
His attacking prowess was evident from the outset, making a brilliant down the right-hand side before crossing for Rashford’s early goal, also teeing up Christian Eriksen for another chance, soon afterwards.
Onana: We have to move on
INTERVIEW | Andre is disappointed not to win but looking forward to the challenges ahead under Ruben's tutelage...
Marcus Rashford earned eight per cent of fans’ votes having notched his fifth goal of the season early on, with a clinical finish in front of goal. The industrious Bruno Fernandes was not too far behind either, earning the recognition of five per cent of supporters.
It will be intriguing to see more of Ruben’s Reds in the coming games and who could impress if we persist with the new-look system.
Congratulations to Andre on winning our Man of the Match award.
