Who has been Manchester United's most consistent player in the Premier League era?

Ask most United fans aged 30 or over and there will probably be a runaway leader in terms of the nominees - Denis Irwin.

The Republic of Ireland legend has even been dubbed 'Mr Consistency' in some quarters, for his ability to deliver at least a seven or eight-out-of-ten performance in every single match he played for the Reds between 1990 and 2002.

Denis Irwin hit 33 goals for United, which is no mean feat for a full-back. Here are five of our favourites…

However, what if you asked the man himself for his view on the matter?

We all know Den is far too unassuming and modest to agree he is the chief contender, so he opted, without hesitation, for another Reds icon in Nemanja Vidic.

"Probably the most consistent players are defenders," he told us. "I've got to say that.

“Strikers, you know, go on unbelievable streaks but sometimes you've got to be super sharp to be a striker.

“So I'd probably pick a defender. Vidic was one of my favourite players.

Serbian centre-back Nemanja Vidic.

“I think he was a great partner for Rio [Ferdinand]. He was just an out-and-out defender but I shouldn't really say that because he could play football as well.

“He always came across as an out-and-out defender anyway and one no centre-forward would want to come up against. He very rarely made mistakes, was aggressive and scored a few important goals for us.

“I would say Vidic, on that front.”
