Who was United's Man of the Match v Rangers?

Thursday 23 January 2025 23:05

Manchester United extended our unbeaten run in the Europa League thanks to a 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford.

An own goal from Jack Butland and a late strike from Bruno Fernandes ensured victory in M16 after Gers forward Cyriel Dessers had levelled the scoring with just two minutes to go.

But our no.8 latched on to Lisandro Martinez's perfectly weighted pass in stoppage time to secure three points for the Reds.

In a game that eventually burst into life at the Theatre of Dreams, the voting in our post-match poll swung heavily the way of one man in particular.

The story of a dramatic night in M16 as the Reds take a giant stride towards reaching the Europa League last 16.

Fernandes's stunning volley surely went a long way in deciding his place on top of the podium, as he romped home with a whopping 65 per cent of the votes.

Amorim's side found a way late on and Bruno's energy to burst forward into the box was merited with a match-winning goal in front of the Stretford End.

Popping up everywhere across the contest, our no.8 kept the play flowing and his passion was evident in a game that had plenty of emotion.

In second place was Alejandro Garnacho who performed well across his 90 minutes, including plenty of diligent defensive work.

The admiration for Garna was evident as we reached the final stages, with the Stretford End chanting the 20-year-old's name to make their feelings known.

His impressive first-half display could have included a goal too if not for a smart stop from Butland to deny him.

Bruno: We could have killed the game earlier

United’s matchwinner Bruno Fernandes felt we should have put Rangers to bed earlier than we did…

In joint third with five per cent each was Martinez, Amad and young Academy graduate Toby Collyer, who made his first European start partnering Christian Eriksen in the heart of our midfield.

But all credit on this occasion goes to Fernandes on a stunning goal that extends our impressive European record this season.

Bravo, Bruno. Keep at it!
