Who was our Man of the Match against Burnley?

Saturday 27 April 2024 12:00

Manchester United endured a frustrating afternoon of Premier League action against Burnley on Saturday' as Antony’s late goal proved not to be enough to earn us the three points against Vincent Kompany’s side.

Erik ten Hag’s men persisted in front of goal for much of the 90 minutes and it looked as though our doggedness would see us prevail, when our no.21 found the bottom corner with 10 minutes left to go at the Theatre of Dreams.

Plenty of our Reds had been involved in our efforts to find the all-important opener, with Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes also among those to go close, while Andre Onana was on alert to keep us in it with some important stops at the other end.

But Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty put a dampener on the afternoon, as the visitors took a share of the spoils from M16.

Following the game, we ran our Man of the Match poll, and you can find out below who our fans selected as United's standout man against the Clarets…

Antony provided United’s decisive goalscoring moment on 80 minutes, and as a result, earned the bulk of the recognition (31%) from our supporters.

The Brazilian kept his balance brilliantly when through on goal to hit the opening goal late in the contest, having been heavily involved in our attacking play throughout the game.

Our no.21 went close with other opportunities in both halves, drawing some smart stops from Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

Fernandes also drew plaudits for his typical creative style as he forged open the Burnley defence on a number of occasions - earning 24 per cent of the vote.

The Portuguese midfielder was also unfortunate not to open the scoring in the first half when he struck the post with an effort inside the box from a tight angle.

At the other end of the pitch, Onana had to maintain his concentration to pull off a string of impressive stops. The Cameroonian goalkeeper earned 19 per cent of the vote from fans in our app.

Our no.24 notably made some acrobatic saves in the first half, diving to keep out a Wilson Odobert curling strike, and brilliantly reacting to deny Lyle Foster from point-blank. Of course, Burnley's late penalty was given for a foul by our goalkeeper, but Andre once again displayed his quality throughout the encounter.

Also at the back, Maguire was recognised by fans with 10 per cent of the vote, as he put in another solid defensive display.

The England defender made some important actions, particularly in the first half when he was well-positioned to prevent the ball from reaching Foster bearing down on goal, and he also brought the ball forward expertly in the move which led to Fernandes hitting the post.

But it is Antony who ultimately earned the majority of our fans' votes, meaning he claims United's Man of the Match award for the first time this season.
