Will Bruno finish as United's top scorer again?

Tuesday 17 August 2021 14:30

Bruno Fernandes jumped straight into pole position at the top of United's top-scorers list on Saturday, with that remarkable hat-trick in the 5-1 dismantling of Leeds United.

Already, the Portuguese's stunning start has supporters and critics wondering whether he can finish as the club's leading scorer for a second successive campaign.

Last term, in his first full season after joining from Sporting Club, Bruno racked up 28 efforts to finish seven goals clear of Marcus Rashford.

But with Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood in free-flowing form towards the end of 2020/21, and Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford also due to chip in with their fair share, our no.18 has plenty of competition if he wants to emerge on top once more.

Ahead of the start of the season, United Review asked six United enthusiasts – including some well-known names! – for their predictions on who will finish as our leading marksman.

Have a read of their forecasts, and then let us know who you are backing via the poll below...
Denis Irwin, club ambassador
“Jadon Sancho will score goals, Bruno will chip in with a lot too, but I’ll go with Edinson Cavani.”

Sam Homewood, MUTV presenter
“Bruno Fernandes. With Sancho added to our attack, we’ll only win more penalties; add those to Bruno’s goals from open play and I think he’ll take it.”

Danny Webber, former United striker
“Edinson Cavani knows now what we are. The fans are back in the stadiums and he’ll really flourish with the supporters behind him. He showed us how good he is last season and with the supply he’ll be getting from Jadon Sancho and everybody else, I can see him scoring plenty.”

Who will finish as United's top scorer in 2021/22?

Mark Froggatt, club journalist
“Edinson Cavani scored 10 of his 17 United goals in his final 11 matches of last season and, now fully settled and with an adoring fanbase in attendance, our glorious horseman will top the chart.”

Pete Boyle, United supporter
“If he stays injury free, I think Cavani’s going to shine in packed grounds this season. I expect him to love the limelight, and help the younger players. You could almost see an Eric-like situation where he inspires others.”

Alex Hobson, producer/DJ (and MUFC steward!)
“If he gets a good run of games, Cavani. With Sancho joining, plus Bruno and Rashford, he’ll have the perfect service, so he’s going to bag quite a bit this season.”
