Revealed: Who United play after European games

Thursday 20 August 2020 10:24

Manchester United’s provisional 2020/21 Premier League fixtures were revealed earlier today, giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Reds a running order to consider for the next 10 months.

As well as knowing who we will play on the opening and closing days, and the dates of crunch matches with Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds United, it’s also clear which teams we’ll be facing after European matches.

United will, of course, return to the UEFA Champions League group stage next term, after finishing third in the Premier League in 2019/20.

With this season’s final still to be played and the qualifying stage for the 2020/21 tournament under way, it has been confirmed that the draw for the group stage will take place in Athens on Friday 1 October.

The matches will then be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays across eight weeks from 20/21 October, with a three-week break in the middle to accommodate international fixtures.

The Reds’ league opponents after our first European game will be Chelsea at home on Saturday 24 October. Arsenal’s visit to Old Trafford a week later will also follow a Champions League clash.

We’ll then travel to Everton on Saturday 7 November after our third-group stage game, at which point the Champions League takes a back seat until the end of the month.

When Europe’s premier tournament does return with our fourth continental fixture, we’ll subsequently have to negotiate a trip to Southampton on Saturday 28 November.

A further away trip, to West Ham United – where we’ve lost on each of our last two visits – is in the calendar the following weekend for Saturday 5 December, after our fifth Champions League engagement.

Our final group game in Europe will come just days before the season's first Premier League derby against Manchester City, currently set for Saturday 12 December at Old Trafford. Let's hope that progress to the round-of-16 has been secured by then, and Ole can rotate his squad ahead of the hectic festive period!
