Why Bruno jokes he is not happy with Ole

Some Manchester United fans would like to wrap Bruno Fernandes in cotton wool, appreciating the influence he has had on the side since joining last January.

The energetic midfielder always puts in a real shift out on the pitch and wants to be involved, as he was in last week's Carabao Cup victory over Everton, and again in the 2-2 draw at Leicester City.

Indeed, a recent study by the CIES Football Observatory found he had the fourth-most minutes in world football throughout the year. Our skipper Harry Maguire came out on top, with Bruno's Portugal team-mate Ruben Dias, of Manchester City, in second.

The man in third is a certain Lionel Messi, the Barcelona superstar.

Study shows Maguire is no.1 in world football

A study shows Harry played the most minutes in football across 2020 - and two more Reds are in the top 10!

So you would be forgiven for thinking our no.18 might feel he needs a bit of a breather, considering the busy schedule at this time of the year.

However, he started on Boxing Day, when assisting and scoring a goal, and his competitive streak means he is upset not to have featured more! He even wants to top this particular table, ahead of his colleague Maguire!

When we told him of the survey, he replied: "I’m not happy. I need to say this to the coach: ‘I want to be the first one!’ [Laughs]

“Of course, it’s really important to play. The more games and more minutes you play, the more confidence you have. It’s always like that.

“I feel the confidence from the staff and the coach. It’s very important for me as this is part of the way I am settling down. I feel the trust from the coach. ‘I need you and I want you to play, I will give you the chances’.

“When you see the minutes I have had this season, it’s trusting in me and I have to give something to the club."

With Wolves up next on Tuesday night, in the fixture where Bruno made his debut for the club, and the final game of the year for us, it will be interesting to see if Fernandes is allowed a rest at some point - with Aston Villa, Manchester City (in the Carabao Cup) and Watford (in the Emirates FA Cup) all due at Old Trafford in the early part of 2021.

One thing you can be certain of is that he will not be happy if he is asked to sit one of these games out!
