Why Henderson starts against Boro

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick says Dean Henderson deserves his start for Manchester United against Middlesbrough because of his performances in training.

The homegrown Academy graduate has been given the nod to make his third appearance of the season with David De Gea, named Premier League Player of the Month on Friday, not in the matchday squad.

It is another chance for Henderson to impress, under the lights at Old Trafford, in the Emirates FA Cup fourth-round encounter.

Our video cameras spotted Henderson's shirt in the dressing room ahead of kick-off.

"Again, with him, we have a fantastic goalkeeper," Ralf told MUTV's Stewart Gardner before the game.

"His training performances, since I arrived, have been outstanding and that's why I have decided to give him a game tonight in front of a sold-out Old Trafford stadium.

"He more than deserves that.''

Former United favourite John O'Shea, working with MUTV before the game, had his say on the situation.

"He's pushed David De Gea, who knows he needs to perform," explained the Irishman. "He's raised his game and that's a credit to the goalkeepers' union because they've been pushing each other. Tonight, Dean has a chance to shine.

"Hopefully we will not see too much of him! But, if he does, he will be ready to step up to the plate."
