Why three Reds missed Las Vegas game

Monday 31 July 2023 01:38

Erik ten Hag made 11 changes to his Manchester United team to face Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

The boss decided on wholesale changes after the defeat to Real Madrid in Houston, as Scott McTominay led the team out at the Allegiant Stadium.

One of the starters from the midweek trip to Texas, Kobbie Mainoo, departed the tour early after picking up an injury that looks likely to sideline him for the first part of the 2023/24 season.

But two other members of that line-up also didn't play at the impressive new venue in Vegas, which usually hosts local NFL side the Raiders.

Alejandro Garnacho and Raphael Varane were left out of the 26-man matchday squad for precautionary reasons.

Amad was another player not involved at the Allegiant Stadium, with the Ivorian having a knee issue which requires assesment.

He left the field early in the second half after coming on as a substitute during the opening game of Tour 2023, against Arsenal in New Jersey, and played no part in the subsequent Wrexham and Real Madrid friendlies.

Jadon Sancho was selected as part of a front three to face his former club, while erstwhile United loanee Marcel Sabitzer made his first appearance for Dortmund following his move from Bayern Munich.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring for the Reds, but Donyell Malen's double gave Dortmund a half-time lead.

Antony replied quickly after the break, although Dortmund got the winner 19 minutes from time through Youssoufa Moukoko.
