Why Wolves win sets new record for Erik

Saturday 13 May 2023 19:04

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag witnessed his side earn a 2-0 Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho earned a vital three points in the Reds’ push for Champions League qualification.

Although attention has, of course, largely centred on the battle for the top four, Saturday's victory earned Ten Hag a record-breaking 38th win in all competitions this season – the most for any United manager in their debut season with the club.

The Dutchman overtakes Jose Mourinho’s record, which has stood for six years. Mourinho joined ahead of the 2016/17 campaign, accumulating 37 wins, and picking up the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield along the way.

No other United manager has won over 30 matches during their first season, with the next best records featuring David Moyes (2013/14, 27 wins), Frank O’Farrell (1971/1972, 24 wins), Wilf McGuinness (1969/70, 23 wins) and Louis van Gaal (2014/15, 23 wins).

Ten Hag has overseen a number of exceptional performances in the league this season, including stirring home victories over Liverpool (2-1), Arsenal (3-1) and Manchester City (2-1).

United have also enjoyed success in Europe, overcoming Barcelona over two legs (4-3 on aggregate) as well as putting four goals past Real Betis at Old Trafford, and progressing 5-1 on aggregate.

With three Premier League games remaining and an all-Manchester Emirates FA Cup final to play, the manager could stretch his record-breaking campaign to a phenomenal 43 wins.

It would also see United secure Champions League qualification and extra silverware to add to their our Carabao Cup success.
