Could Sabitzer shine against Spurs again?

Thursday 27 April 2023 12:55

Marcel Sabitzer could get the opportunity to extend his impressive record against Tottenham, in Thursday's Premier League encounter.

Bruno Fernandes picked up an injury and was substituted in the 101st minute of our FA Cup semi-final triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, meaning he has been flagged as a doubt for the latest clash in the capital.

However, when manager Erik ten Hag was quizzed on the condition of our no.8 in his press conference on Wednesday, he refused to completely rule out the midfield maestro.

Irrespective of the Portugal international's availability, Sabitzer's proven pedigree against the north Londoners means he could be a great asset for the Reds.

The boss has spoken about our no.8's current situation ahead of the Tottenham game.

Sabitzer, who is yet to score in the Premier League for United since his January deadline-day loan move from Bayern Munich, has found the net three times for the club so far in other competitions.

Since moving into a more advanced role, the Austria international has displayed the attacking threat that he built his reputation on, becoming a heavily sought-after midfielder on the continent.

Sabitzer was ruled out of our previous league fixture, the 2-0 win away to Nottingham Forest, after suffering a problem in the warm-up.

However, he featured both in our Europa League quarter-final second leg defeat in Seville and Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Brighton, scoring one of the penalties in the shootout.

He may not have lined up against Spurs for United yet, but Marcel has scored two goals against the London club previously.

In the 2019/20 Champions League campaign, our no.15 notched a brace in a 3-0 home win for RB Leipzig in the second leg of the last 16, ensuring an emphatic 4-0 aggregate triumph over Spurs following a 1-0 victory in the first leg, which he also appeared in.

Now, on loan from Bayern Munich, Sabitzer is set to face the north Londoners once more, but, this time, he will be wearing the red of Manchester United.
