Wout Weghorst has thanked Manchester United's fans for making his stay at Old Trafford so special.

The 31-year-old striker has taken time to reflect on his loan with the Reds, in the second half of 2022/23.

The Netherlands international played 31 times in total for the club, and the experience will stand him in good stead for what lies ahead in his career.

To the backdrop of 'Take me home, United Road', he delivered this emotional message to the supporters who backed him all the way.

"Dear Manchester United fans," he said. "Thanks for everything. I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal, against Betis at Old Trafford.

"Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge. Wish you all the best for the future. Manchester United fans - thank you for everything."

In an interview with us towards the end of last term, Wout discussed some of his highlights, including his part in the Wembley wins over Newcastle United, in the Carabao Cup final, and Brighton & Hove Albion, in the Emirates FA Cup semi-final.

"The final was, of course, the first time for me at Wembley," he said. "And yeah, to win there, also my contribution in the game, it was just a beautiful memory and a beautiful day to win my first trophy.

"So that was really nice, but the semi-final we played – after the penalties. We always knew, things like this are just a small detail. So my slide [in celebration in front of the fans] was just a little bit of relief and happiness."

The penalty shootout with Brighton was a dramatic one!

Weghorst converted a spot-kick in the shootout win over Brighton but played down the suggestion any mind games with Solly March had a major impact on the outcome of the semi-final.

"To be honest, I never spoke about it because nobody asked me," he replied. "But I didn't kiss the ball!

"I was behind the ball and told him [March]: 'Don't shoot left!' That was actually the only thing I said to him. I just wanted to try to maybe get a little bit in his head and maybe just get him thinking about what he was doing. Afterwards, maybe then it could help but I don't think it made a difference."

The centre-forward also told us about his great satisfaction at having pulled on the famous red shirt.

"I'm proud, first of all," he said. "I'm still really, really proud and thankful to play for this amazing club, a big club, the most beautiful club in England."

Best of luck to Wout for the future from everyone at United.
