Wout Weghorst is determined to help Manchester United capitalise on a great chance of reaching the Carabao Cup final, after the Reds earned a commanding win in Wednesday’s semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest.

After a stunning solo opener from Marcus Rashford, Weghorst crucially doubled United’s lead just before half-time with his first goal for the club. Bruno Fernandes later rounded off the 3-0 win with a fine strike in front of the travelling away fans late on.

The Reds will welcome Forest back to Old Trafford next week for the second leg and with a three-goal lead to take into that game, Weghorst is intent on making the advantage count as we aim to progress to the final of the competition.

Wout Weghorst was delighted to net his maiden Reds strike in the win at Forest...

Speaking to MUTV at The City Ground, the Dutchman said: “It's a great result, a great first win in the first match, but of course now it’s a big opportunity to go to the final.

“There’s one match to go. If we play like we did in the second half where we twere more calm on the ball, with more easy play, and just controlled the game, then I don’t see any reason to get in trouble next week.

“But of course, it’s a match and you saw in the first half, we have to deliver and do things well otherwise you can get in trouble. We were lucky with the 1-1 [Forest's equaliser] that was cancelled.

“We have to be ready and we have to be focused. You’re never allowed to give this away.”

Wout wheels away in celebration after opening his United account.

Weghorst’s effort was his first for the club since his arrival on loan from Burnley was confirmed just shy of a fortnight ago, and he was pleased to get off the mark as a United player.

“As a striker, you want to score these goals and also this first one,” added the Netherlands international. “Hopefully, many [more] to come.

“It was a good attack over the right side. It was Casemiro, I think. who played it to Antony and he shot well.

“When I saw the high bouncing ball, I just went straight for the rebound and it came exactly like I hoped in front of my feet, and I could finish it.

“You’re happy and of course you wanted it [his first goal], so that’s a good thing. I’m happy to help the team in this way because I also think it was an important moment shortly before half-time.

Goals from Rashford, Weghorst and Fernandes put the Reds in a commanding position after the semi-final first leg…

“It gave us a way better feeling because, to be honest, the first half was not how we wanted it. I think it was also a good moment.”

Having now broken his goalscoring duck for the club with three appearances under his belt, all within the space of just a week, the towering forward agreed he is enjoying his time with United so far.

“Yeah, I am enjoying it, it goes quickly. It’s three games already played and not much time to enjoy everything. It’s all about delivering and it’s all about being there and it’s something I try to do, and we all get focused and ready for the next cup game. We go again.”
