Thursday 27 January 2022 13:30

A set of images intended to reflect the history and the spirit of Manchester United would never be complete without Sir Matt Busby.

The pioneering manager who shaped much of the club as we know it today is therefore the subject of our latest poll in the 'Your United Pic' series.

We have already asked you to select photos of Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as great Old Trafford goals, and in the fourth part of our campaign we want you to choose the best picture of Sir Matt on our shortlist of eight.

The Scot became United boss after being demobbed at the end of the Second World War, taking up the role fully in October 1945. Within three years he had guided the club to its first post-war trophy, the FA Cup in 1948 when Blackpool were defeated 4-2 in a thrilling final.

Busby's masterstroke was to invest time and effort in young players, a policy that paid huge dividends when the Reds won the first five FA Youth Cups. Many members of those successful sides went on to make the grade in the first team, and earn the collective nickname of the Busby Babes.

The Babes featured heavily as the third of United's league titles in the 1950s was secured in 1957 and the youthful squad then went on a new adventure, as Busby led the club into continental competition for the very first time.
The 1957/58 campaign was, of course, to be marred by tragedy as the Munich Air Disaster claimed the lives of 23 people - including eight players and three officials - as the Reds returned from a European Cup tie away to Red Star Belgrade.

Busby was also seriously injured but he eventually recovered, returning to the helm at OId Trafford and building a new side that included the iconic talents of George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton - also a Munich survivor.

The FA Cup in 1963 was followed by two more league titles in 1965 and 1967, and finally the crowning glory of the European Cup in 1968 as United became the first English club to win it.
