Iqbal and Savage soak up the experience

Wednesday 13 July 2022 09:00

Manchester United’s Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage clearly enjoyed their first matchday experience of Tour 2022.

The duo, who both made their senior debuts in last season’s Champions League home match against Young Boys, played together in midfield during the 4-0 win over Liverpool in our pre-season opener on Tuesday.

That was the latest invaluable experience for the pair, and all of our youngsters on the trip, who have been working closely with Erik ten Hag and the senior squad both at Carrington and in Thailand.

The victory over the Merseysiders at the Rajamangala Stadium brings an end to the first leg of the tour, which Iqbal and Savage reflected on after the game to MUTV’s Zarah Connolly, in advance of the flight to Australia.

Young Reds Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage spoke to Zarah about their accomplished performances against Liverpool...

“[It’s been] an absolutely amazing experience over here in Thailand,” Savage said.

“The fans have been amazing. For me, it’s a privilege to be on this tour and to get the win was extra special tonight.”
Ten half-time changes from Ten Hag meant a mix of youth and experience on the pitch for United in the second half with Iqbal and Savage among several young Reds introduced.

Liverpool’s subs on the hour mark, which saw them line up with a particularly senior and familiar XI, then provided the perfect opportunity for the youngsters to test themselves.

Iqbal said: “Playing a very strong Liverpool team and obviously coming away with the win, I’d just like to thank the manager for putting his trust in me and Sav, you know?

“[I’m] feeling excited, first tour. Honestly, it’s been boiling, the sweat, but it’s only going to help us with the season, just adapting to the last four days in Bangkok has been tough and obviously we’re now going to Australia.

“Nine hours' [time] difference between there and England, I think, so it’s going to be tough but exciting times and we look forward to it.”

Iqbal and Savage went on to hail the hospitality and support that the team has received since touching down in Thailand, as we prepare for Australia, where our pre-season preparations will continue.

“I’d just like to say a massive thank you,” Iqbal said.

“The support and love out here has been amazing. Every time we go to training, we’re in the lobby or matches like today, [it’s been] amazing. All the singing and the noise. So, I’d just like to say thank you.

“I know it’s tough for them to watch games in England because of the time difference and stuff but I’d just like to say a big, big thank you from everyone really.”
Zidane Iqbal produced a polished display in the second half.

Savage added: "It's the first time I’ve really experienced this, except for our debuts, so to see the fans, the support from all the Thailand boys and girls has obviously been amazing.”

You can watch United’s next Tour 2022 outing, against Melbourne Victory on Friday, live only on MUTV.
