Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Quote Being given the opportunity to move the club forward, with all its potential, is fantastic.

Former Manchester United and Norway striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to Old Trafford in a very different role on 19 December 2018, when he was appointed as the club's caretaker manager.

The Norwegian's first game in charge, following Jose Mourinho's departure, was ironically away to the only British team he had previously managed, Cardiff City. It proved to be a dream debut as the Reds racked up a comfortable 5-1 win. In fact, United won the first eight fixtures of Ole's tenure, making it the best start by any boss in our history.

Even Solskjaer's first defeat was turned into a triumph. After losing 2-0 at home in the Champions League last-16 first leg to Paris Saint-Germain, Ole oversaw a magnificent comeback in the return match on 6 March. The Reds won 3-1, sealing an away-goals victory with Marcus Rashford's VAR-awarded penalty in injury time.

Three weeks later, the intense speculation over whether OIe would get the job on a full-time basis ended with an official announcement. On 28 March 2019, the club confirmed he was our new permanent manager, having signed a three-year contract.

"From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club," said Solskjaer. "It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.

"The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far. This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve."

As Ole said in the statement, his first steps into coaching were taken with the Reds after he retired as a player in August 2007. He was appointed reserve-team coach during the following summer and helped to develop emerging talents such as Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba.

Solskjaer's initial 14-year association with United ended when he was offered the manager's position at another of his former clubs, Molde FK. In his maiden season back in Norway, from March to November 2011, he steered them to their first ever Eliteserien league crown. They won it again in the next campaign, 2012, and while a third consecutive title proved to be beyond them, MFK won another trophy under Ole, the Norwegian Cup in 2013.

The United legend's success as manager of Molde attracted other clubs and he landed his first Premier League opportunity in the middle of the 2013/14 season, when he took the helm at struggling Cardiff City. Ole visited Old Trafford as an opposition manager at the end of January 2014, with United winning 2-0, and following the Welsh club's descent into the Championship, he departed early in the following season.

Solskjaer's second spell as Molde manager began with a Europa League win over Celtic in October 2015 and he remained in charge until just before Christmas in 2018, when he received a call he could just not turn down - from Manchester United.
