Commiserations to Marc Skinner and his United Women players, whose proud run to a first Subway Women’s League Cup final ends as runners-up, after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. A 19th-minute opener from former Reds forward Lauren James meant the Blues edged a relatively even first half on the scoreline, but the title-holders were able to limit our clear-cut goalscoring opportunities after the break, before extending their advantage through Aggie Beever-Jones with just over 10 minutes left to play. In a lengthy added-time period, Melvine Malard forced Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton into a good save and Lea Schuller flashed a shot just wide of goal as the Reds made a last-gasp effort to keep our silverware hopes alive, but it’s our opponents who win the trophy and retain their crown in Bristol. Congratulations to them.

United Women’s task of turning around the Women’s League Cup final has just got trickier, with a second Chelsea goal arriving off the right boot of half-time substitute Aggie Beever-Jones. After a cross from the right flank, the Blues forward got to a loose ball inside the penalty area and was able to divert it past Phallon Tullis-Joyce with a poked finish. There’s still time for United to get back into this contest, and keep alive the hope of a first League Cup title, but the clock is ticking down.

After a relatively drab first half, the Reds really turned it on in the second 45 minutes, with goals from Casemiro, Cunha and Sesko – not forgetting the two crucial assists from Fernandes. That could prove to be a huge win against one of our rival top-four chasers.
