De Gea: It’s a special competition

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea says he has a strong affiliation with the Europa League.

Our no.1 won it during his time with Atletico Madrid, in 2010, and featuring on the United bench when the Reds went all the way in 2017.

Looking ahead to our second Europa League fixture of the 2022/23 season, away to Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova, the Spaniard expressed his desire to win the competition again this term.

“I think it is a great competition,” he said at the pre-match press conference, alongside United manager Erik ten Hag. “We will go with everything [to win].

“I have very good memories, to be honest, of this competition and, tomorrow, we have another big game against Sheriff.

“We lost the first one [against Real Sociedad], so we have to try to win the game tomorrow against a difficult team. But, for sure, it's a special competition.”

De Gea also praised the warm welcome the local fans gave the United squad when they touched down in Chisinau on Wednesday evening.

“It feels great, to be honest,” he said. “It's always nice. The people are very nice people, so we are happy to be here and, hopefully, we can show a great match tomorrow and let the people enjoy [the action].

“We are grateful to be here.
