De Gea stop up for Save of the Month

David De Gea was at full stretch against Crystal Palace when keeping out a goalbound effort by Odsonne Edouard in our recent 1-1 draw.

Although the Manchester United keeper was ultimately beaten, in injury time, by Michael Olise's precise free-kick, his stupendous stop rightly drew widespread acclaim, and has earned him a place on a six-strong shortlist for the Premier League's Save-of-the-Month award for January.

Edouard picked the ball up from an Olise pass and let fly from outside the area, with De Gea managing to divert the shot onto the top of the bar and out for a corner.

It was an isolated attack by the home side in the first half which probably made it an even better save by the alert Spaniard, who had not really otherwise been tested to that point.

There are five other saves competing with De Gea's for the prize during a busy month of top-flight action.

Lukasz Fabianski of West Ham United thwarted Leeds United's Rodrigo, Aston Villa's World Cup-winner Emiliano Martinez denied Leeds forward Jack Harrison, Aaron Ramsdale blocked Ryan Sessegnon's effort in the north London derby, Kepa Arrizabalaga preserved Chelsea's lead against Palace's Cheick Doucoure and shut-out king Nick Pope, the Newcastle keeper, ensured he kept another clean sheet by repelling Jean-Philippe Mateta's attempt for Palace.
