Erik explains team choice v Barcelona

Erik ten Hag has named his Manchester United side to take on Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Thursday evening.

Our Europa League play-off first leg against the Catalans kicks off at 17:45 GMT.

There are three changes to the side which beat Leeds United 2-0 on Sunday afternoon, with one enforced as Marcel Sabitzer has not travelled - the on-loan midfielder is serving a one-match European suspension, and former Real Madrid man Casemiro replaces him in the engine room.

“The experience that he [Casemiro] brings in the squad with Rapha [Varane] is huge, and David [De Gea],” Ten Hag told MUTV. “So everyone can learn from it but also I think you feel more secure when you have them on your side.”

Lisandro Martinez is also banned and Harry Maguire is on the bench, with Raphael Varane coming in to partner Luke Shaw in central defence.

“He did it previously against City and in certain roles he fits very good there,” Erik said of Luke’s position.

“It also allows the full-back to go high and he can defend very good in the left wide area, he can cover. That’s also the plan for tonight.”

The other alteration to the side sees Aaron Wan-Bissaka replace Diogo Dalot at right-back. Wout Weghorst will lead the line on his European debut for the Reds, with Bruno Fernandes captaining United.
